Course outline

This program prepares students to pursue career opportunities in hospital and private pathology laboratories as qualified medical laboratory technicians. Students develop technical skills in general pathology, pathophysiology, haematology, histology, biochemistry, clinical chemistry, blood banking and medical microbiology. They undertake industry placements supervised by experienced medical scientists to develop practical skills in laboratory medicine. On graduation, students have the opportunity to complete the Bachelor of Biomedical Science with one further year of full-time study. Other requirements

Before undertaking industry placement courses, students must obtain and provide evidence of vaccination against hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis and varicella (chickenpox) and obtain a Blue Card; refer to institution. Completion of Year 12 or attained age 17 years

Recommended study
English; General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics; at least one science subject (preferably Chemistry)
